The Self is the ordering and unifying center of the total psyche (conscious and unconscious), while the ego is the center of the conscious personality, attending to the demands of external world to adapt and survive. Ideally, the ego takes guidance from the deeper Self in adapting to the external world.

Fanie Buys | This Man | 31 Jan – 24 Feb 18
This Man features portraits derived from family photographs and celebrity tabloids, in reference to Buys’s inner confrontation with the looming acquaintance he both seeks to impress and ignore in the process of unashamedly becoming himself: ‘This is a man I hate, and a man I hate with an especial glee because I find him incredibly attractive. These are not paintings of this man. I would never paint this man. I just told you I hate him.’

Richard Mason | 放浪と学習の年  | 31 Jan – 24 Feb 18

Lost in Known Territory | 28 Feb – 24 Mar 2018
“Over the years I have collected and catalogued a large selection of images from various sources including books, magazines, websites and social media, personal photo archives, and many more. The figures in this body of work were created from fragments of these images, and their compositions reference certain historical paintings motifs.

This creates subjects that seem to be contextualised and somewhat recognisable, yet they passionately attempt to proclaim their own unique identities, despite our pre-conceived notions. This process examines how we impose identities upon others, and subsequently challenges fashionable standards of beauty and sexualisation.”
