Another young violinist makes her Cape Town debut in the town where she was raised — the German violinist Christina Brabetz will play the Violin Concerto no 1 in A minor by Shostakovich in the third concert in the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s 12th International Summer Music Festival. On the podium will be the German maestro Jochen Rieder, who will conduct the world premiere of a new piece by the South African composer Antoni Schonken entitled to be: to know. The final work on the programme is the Romeo and Juliette Suite by Prokofiev.

Jamie Jupiter and Nick Turner come together once more to bring us their Cape Town vibes. They met in the 90’s while playing for Honeymoon Suites and Sons of Trout respectively. Since then have been weaving a musical relationship through projects such as Mikanic and Korreltjie Kantel. Both are songwriters of a somewhat quirky nature. Nicks percussive guitar style is well suited to Jamie’s playful multi-instrumentation. Vocally, Nick can soar to higher places while Jamie brings in the bottom vooma. They’ll be sharing new works as well as re-visiting some of their old favorites, solo and together.

Tsotsi, the Musical | 8 – 17 Feb 18
Based on the novel by Athol Fugard, Tsotsi, the Musical tells the powerful story of a hardened township criminal whose life changes forever after a bungled mugging leaves him caring for a stranger’s baby. With music composed by singer-songwriter Zwai Bala, and book and lyrics by Mkhululi Mabija, this gritty, contemporary musical adaptation is directed by award winners Neil Coppen and Khayelihle Dominique Gumede,set design by Michael Mitchell and Neil Coppen with choreography by Standard Bank Young Artist Thandizile “Sonia” Radebe, lighting by Kobus Rossouw and costumes by Noluthando Lobese.

When Swallows Cry is a hard-hitting trilogy of playlets that explores the inequities and layered complexities of contemporary global mobility, particularly from African perspectives. Once forced to “migrate” as slaves, Africans are now among the world’s least attractive migrants in the wealthy economies of the world, many built – not insubstantially – on African labour and mineral resources.

The Fugard Theatre
The 320-seater Fugard Theatre is located within the historic Sacks Futeran building in Cape Town’s District Six, with the renovated Congregational Church Hall in Caledon Street as its entrance. Ley Mboramwe is a Cape Town based artist, originally from Kinshasa, DRC. He completed his degree in Fine Art at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa, overcoming the loss of his parents and managing to qualify in the midst of the war. Experiences of his time in the DRC, its suffering, beauty, politics, and culture is evident in his work and has shaped his approach to the themes and styles he uses.

Penny Siopis, This is a True Story: Six Films (1997 – 2017) | 16 Feb – 15 Jul 18
The exhibition evokes ideas of truth as a merging of experience, fact, fiction, imagination and the fragility of memory. Projecting a multiplicity of experiences, Siopis’ films make use of found 8 mm and 16 mm film footage, drawing from official documents, newspaper clippings and personalised accounts of history to create an overlooked historiography.

This Man features portraits derived from family photographs and celebrity tabloids, in reference to Buys’s inner confrontation with the looming acquaintance he both seeks to impress and ignore in the process of unashamedly becoming himself: ‘This is a man I hate, and a man I hate with an especial glee because I find him incredibly attractive. These are not paintings of this man. I would never paint this man. I just told you I hate him.’

Richard Mason | 放浪と学習の年  | 31 Jan – 24 Feb 18
Drawing on our anxieties of the digital age and the speed at which technology has become our environment, Mason uses industrial materials and processes to produce intricate works that explore what he calls “our merging with the reality of the virtual.”

Iziko Slave Lodge 
The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. The many names of the building over three centuries – Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme Court, and SA Cultural History Museum – reflect the long and rich history of the building.

Until 28 February 2018 | Through Positive Eyes is an exhibition which builds on the work of South African photographer Gideon Mendel, harnessing the power of the arts to banish HIV stigma.

Iziko South African National Gallery
South Africa’s premier art museum houses outstanding collections of South African, African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art.

Selections from the Permanent Collection change regularly to enable the museum to have a full programme of temporary exhibitions of paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, beadwork, textiles and architecture. Updates of the various exhibitions can be viewed on their web page on bottom right section.

Iziko South African Museum
The South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700-million years old to insects and fish caught last week. There are also stone tools made by people 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century, and T-shirts printed yesterday.

The Bo-Kaap Museum, situated in the historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery, showcases local Islamic culture and heritage.

Groot Constantia Manor House with its exhibition of furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass, and copperware, provides an insight into the life of a successful 18th to late 19th century Cape farmer.

Koopmans-de Wet House
This house museum is furnished as a home for a well-to-do Cape family during the late 18th Century. It houses some of the best pieces of Cape furniture and silver in the country, in addition to a priceless collection of ceramics.

The Iziko Maritime Centre features an overview of shipping in Cape Town, and the earliest existing model of Table Bay harbour, completed in 1885 by prisoners and warders of Breakwater Prison, forms part of the exhibitions.

The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, one of only 6 fully fledged planetaria on the African Continent, brings the most advanced digital visualisation technology to Cape Town.

Rust en Vreugd was built as a home for Willem Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) known as a fiscal, around 1777–1778.

Social History Centre
After a three-year programme of renovation and extension of the National Mutual Building on Church Square, it was handed back to Iziko during a media preview event held on International Museum Day, 18 May 2010.
